Overview

For a different kind of sightseeing tour in Korea, take this full-day privately guided excursion from Seoul to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), a border that divides North and South Korea. Your guide takes you along the invasion route that North Korean spy commandos used when they infiltrated the world’s most heavily fortified border in 1968. You'll also have time to reflect on the future of the divided territory during a stop at Imjingak Peace Park near the Imjin River, and the War Memorial of Korea back in Seoul. Lunch and round-trip hotel transport by private vehicle are included.

Fabulous Company and Delicious Food Included

I did the private Spy Tour with Shrek, he was an amazing company and gave great explanations on everything we visited. The food included was delicious and he let us explore a lot of the areas including the 3rd tunnel with free time for ourselves.
Utterly Fascinating alternative DMZ tour

The DMZ was shut when we visited ( we think it reopens early in March) so we took a private tour with DMZ Spy tours with Shrek and Major BangSun Im ( who had recently retired from DMZ military guard). We started with a lovely hours walk in the mountains overlooking Seoul, to see battle site from the 1968 North Korea guerrilla attack and attempted assassination of the South Korean president .
We then drove to Odusan Unification Tower, opposite North Korea where the Han and Imjin Rivers meet. On the route we drove past increasing security measures. Firstly fences of electrified single barbed wire, then double, then triple , past camouflaged tanks - then Polaris missiles! At the tower we looked through binoculars and could see North Koreans in their villages, tending to livestock, cycling , walking their dogs!
After a fantastic lunch of BBQ duck and loads of amazing side dishes, they took us back to Seoul and the War Memorial. There we had a meeting with a North Korean defector- Seo Jae Pyoung. 19 years ago he left his home and got to the Chinese border, where at night he crossed the river to China. He then spent 14 months getting to South Korea. We spent nearly an hour with him and were able to ask him questions.
It was a privilege to meet him and very humbling.
What a fascinating day, we can highly recommend this tour.
Outstanding

I wanted to see the JSA but it was closed so they offered an alternate tour. I was hesitant but in the end I was completely satisfied.

- the short hike and views of Seoul are a great outdoor activity

- being able to peer into North Korea was once in a lifetime

- being able to set foot in the dmz was surreal

- seeing the war museum was such a great educational activity and unexpected

- meeting a defector and listening to his story and answering my questions was unbelievable

- the lunch was one of the best ever and we are huge foodies

The van and tour guide were fantastic. Only areas for improvement: during the hike, the company does not provide water, i think the guide gave us his own. The guide sometimes did not accompany us to give more info. This was good and bad as we had time to ourselves but also wished to learn more. He should ask what each guest prefers.

The negatives are VERY MINOR and overall I strongly recommend this.
Had a great experience

We originally booked for the DMZ tour but because of the African Swine Flu, we were offered to go to an alternative route or a refund. We took the alternative tour which included the Blue House, North Korean commando’s route to assassinate the president, an observation point close to the DMZ, an awesome lunch, War Memorial and a chat with a NK defector.
All of the stops were great and we were not disappointed that we couldn’t make it to the original tour.
What made the tour even better was our guide, Jimmy. He was really helpful, had full knowledge of what was in the tour and even more. He even made the road trips between stops fun.
A must do tour if you have a spare day when visiting Korea.
Very Interesting

Very interesting tour. Unfortunately the JSA was still closed but we got to see other interesting sights.

Shrek had good commentary that made the tour interesting and he's very friendly.
